Text Nine-Eleven Emergency

If you need to call 9-1-1 and you're unable to talk, Franklin County (Ohio) now has an alternative. Send a text message to 911, and wait for results.  Be patient, because it may take a bit longer than you'd think.

While this sounds like a nice alternative to calling 9-1-1 and dealing with the specially trained 911 emergency dispatcher, text messages are problematic.  The system only works in a limited area, and if your text message can't be forwarded (like any voice call can), the appropriate party will be contacted by the 911 operator and your text message will be read over the phone.  This is a sort of voice relay system that hasn't been extensively tested.

The system is also vulnerable to spoofing, which allows a hacker with a sense of humor to text the police that aliens have landed, the Columbus water supply has been poisoned, or that there's a severely impaired driver on the beltway and he's armed.  Mischievous pranksters could also text the police that a certain house has been invaded by terrorists and she's hiding in a closet while the terrorists are torturing the inhabitants.  When the SWAT team kicks in the door, they'll find an elderly couple watching television with an equally elderly dog.  They'll kill the dog, tear up the house, and terrorize the couple until they're convinced that it's all a big mistake.

Nice, huh?

Should you think this is simple over-reaction, please understand that this sort of thing is called SWATTING and requires no special knowledge.  All it requires is a burner phone ($20 Tracfone) and a target.  By enabling the nine-eleven text system, the government has now made it easier than ever to SWAT someone - text messages don't leave a voice print.

Speaking for myself, I don't send text messages.  I'm a very distinct minority, though.
