Criminals don't like sub-zero temperatures and inclement weather any more than law abiding citizens do. The hot weather has brought a few out of the wainscoting - like cockroaches. We have what amounts to a crime free neighborhood here at McNaughten Village, but there have been a few recent incidents that are noteworthy.
Crime 1:
Stolen Gas Cans with Gas as reported by an anonymous neighbor living close by McNaughten Village.
On 8/27/18 at or around 6:30 PM a middle-aged, well-dressed, white male driving a white sedan (Honda Accord or Toyota Camry) with tinted windows parked on the street in front of our home. The man walked into our open garage and stole two full gas cans. As he walked up our driveway he cordially greeted a neighbor. The homeowner had just changed the oil in the family car and was driving around the block to make sure the car was running well. A police report has been filed about this theft.
Crime 2:
Shots Fired as reported by an erudite, observant resident of McNaughten Village who is suffering from sleep deprivation this morning.
On 8/27/18 at or around 11:55 PM, in the vicinity of McNaughten and Livingston, someone fired three shots. I didn't see the shooter, nor did I go out looking for him. I'm a firearm aficionado, and the shots sounded like a 9mm. The cadence was a single shot, then a double tap.
I called the non-emergency Columbus PD number and reported it, for all the good that did. Well, at least the PD has a record of it. I have reported this information to the police.
This is not the first such incident. There have been multiple incidents over the past several years, always in the summer, always late at night (or very early in the morning). The shooter is still at large.
Crime 3:
Prowlers Casing McNaughten Village as reported by a gracious, affable resident of McNaughten Village who has survived the common cold.
On 8/21/18 at or around 4:45 AM I was up taking some cold meds when I noticed two African American young men on bikes with backpacks riding thru our circle. At first I thought they were cutting through to get to McNaughten, when in fact they were prowling around cars, looking in quickly, then riding off. I did not call police as this was over in a matter of 4 minutes. They rode through the circle and back out the main entrance.
All neighbors - Please! - keep your garage door closed, keep your car locked, and keep your valuables inside your home. Keep your car inside your garage whenever possible. We want to discourage criminals (both common and uncommon) whenever possible, and one very good way to do this is to remove all valuables from their sight.
Please be aware of your surroundings and the activity in McNaughten Village. If you see something that might be criminal activity, call the police and report it immediately.
Thank you for your help and cooperation.
